IBIZA.
Although Ibiza and Formentera are part of the Balearic archipielago
they have been known since ancient times as the Pitiusas Islands. They lie off
the Spanish mainland in the Mediterranean and enjoy a privileged situation and climate,
with mild temperatures the whole year round and little rainfall. Ibiza has a surface area
of 521,22 km2 and a population of about 70.000 inhabitants. It is the third largest island
and rather hilly but its highest point is Sa Talaia only 409 m. situated in
San José. Part of the island is covered with pine trees, other typical trees being the
sabinas, fig trees, locust trees and almond trees. These are really beautiful
in February when they are in full blosson, especially round the Santa Inés area. Ibiza is worldwide known by its little coves where the pines join the sea but
also for its extensve stretches of sand and dunes. In the south of the island, near the
international airport are Las Salinas where salt was harvested even at the
time of the Carthaginean colonisation and was the main industry until the arrival of
tourism. The name White Island as Ibiza is also knowm derives from the
whitewashed rural houses, which are another typìcal aspect of the islands landscape
. The name Sant Antoni de
Portmany comes from the old name Portus Manus, as the bay was known by the
Romans . It is the second town in importance on the island , with a population of 10.000
inhabitants, increased during the summer by visitors from all over the world. These
visitors fill the towns promenade, hotels, bars, pubs and discos The shortest
way to Denia in continental Spain is by boat from Sant Antoni. Several ferries depart
every day from the harbour, as well as tourist boats to the different beaches off the bay,
Cala Bassa, Cala Conta, Cala Tarida and to Formentera. There is a XIV century old church
built in the typical ibizan style, a defensive structure to protect the locals against the
attack of pirates in the XVIII and XIX centuries; we can also visit the paleochristian
basilica of Santa Ines, 2 km. from the village centre and 5 km. away is the cave of Ses
Fontenelles, where paintings dating back to the Bronze Age were found. San Antonio boasts
beaches like Es Puet, Calo del Moro, Cala Gració, Cala Gracioneta and Cala Salada. From
all of them you can enjoy an unforgettable sunset, the sun disappearing in the
Mediterranean and in the distance the island of Conejera, where according to legends, the
famous Carthaginean hero Hannibal was born.
